PRObalance - as the word signals - focuses on balance.
The medical term for balance is Homeostasis / Equilibrium. It means that both the physical as well as the mental body are always trying to achieve equilibrium with all means the whole body has come to know over the years of individual development. What the body and the mind know though has - over the centuries of economical growth and political and cultural structures - become a conditioned knowledge. Most of us in the civilised world have forgotten our genuine knowledge, our genuine Self.
If we want to understand how we can - through therapy - trace our genuine Self back, I invite you to look at the image of an onion with its layers; the process of therapy then can be understood as peeling an onion.
From day one our sole parental layer (or even prior to birth) gives us indications how we should or should not be, primarily due to the feelings of the mother because she is thriving through pregnancy with the aim to feel good, and what's good for her supposedly is good for the baby.
Then the family layer (father, siblings, grandparents etc) adds to conditioning with messages how we should or should not be. The family layer includes the sexual layer.
We then add another layer, the authority layer - from Kindergarten onwards through to school and university years and in the employment field we will be given messages how we should or should not be by whoever who is our "boss" at that given time.
The next layer is the cultural layer. This one gives us messages how we should be or should not be to become a part in the social structure and culture of the country, state, county or city we live in.
Last not least we are programmed by the religious layer giving us our belief system, how we should and should not be.
It becomes obvious how much these layers eventually will have influenced our genuine needs and our abilities to satisfy our needs which, by the time we have grown into adulthood, have become conditioned.
PRO Balance with their Integrative Gestalt Therapy Practitioner Eve Doerschel will guide you through those layers. We call it "Peeling The Onion" after Yaro Starak's book - Y. Starak being a graduated psychologist at the University of Manitoba and Social Worker at the University of British Columbia. Yaro lectures at the University of Queensland and is the Director of the Brisbane Gestalt Centre.
As we 'peel' through the layers we will eventually revisit our genuine Self and from there will be able to gain self-confidence and self-esteem towards a mature person who is able to make the necessary changes in life and will stand up to challenges coming his or her way.
